Artist’s Statement

I delight in the opportunity to discover something new in what has existed & evolved long before I considered it.

My site specific projects are motivated by investigating the extraordinary quality of a space. In these pieces, I highlight an aspect of a place: its history, the reality of environmental impact or the remarkable natural features of the site. These elements merge as a starting point for this work.

I am inspired by the sculptures of Mark Di Suvero for their raw power, Andy Goldsworthy’s installations for their unrivaled play with nature and Tony Crag’s nimble conversation with materials and meaning.

My work is motivated by the small details of everyday life and aims to amplify those tiny treasures in the world around us. There are moments that stop and command us to take notice. I am interested in the personal reflection that emerges when we get lost in the patterns we see in the natural and manufactured world. When we pause, we enable questions to arise within us as we confront our surroundings and ourselves. I recognize this phenomenon in: the ripples on the surface of water, the fairy rings that occur in the forest, the spiderweb in a corner, the synchronization of migrating birds or the landscapes and cityscapes that unravel as far as our eyes can see. These points of connection can get lost. I attempt to revisit, appreciate and interpret these moments through my work. I hope to present a small but magnified portrait and bring into focus just a portion of its story.

I have a love for materials. Process fortifies my work. Initially, welding and pouring metal in foundries excited and empowered me to explore the endless possibilities of making objects. This has evolved over time. The repetitive nature of my process has become meditative for me and my pieces are a physical manifestation of that practice.

Throughout my life, the hand made lace and needlepoint exquisitely and lovingly crafted by my great grandmothers and great aunts made an impression on me. These elaborate and detailed hand made works went well beyond serving the function of curtains or coverings. There was an instinctual dedication in creating these pieces. Working with my hands in this way propels me to create a language and keep telling stories of what ignites my imagination.
