Djerassi Resident Artists Program
California

“Roots to Crown” is located in the redwood forest of northern California. This enormous and majestic redwood stump continues to sit firmly rooted to the earth. Surrounded by a grove of live and towering Redwoods, this upholstered perch is pinned and embellished with over 4,000 upholstery tacks. The piece honors what is both present in our world and quickly disappearing. The viewer is invited to sit or lay on top of the perch and gaze upward at the canopy to contemplate this reality.

La Vie des Formes

“Les duex” series was created during an artist’s residency founded by the artist, Mark DiSuvero. The studio was situated in a working shipyard in the Central part of the south of France. The shipyard sat alongside the pulse of the Soane River. Shifting light dramatically changed the landscape throughout the day. During my time there I saw countless rainbows, free standing ship hulls, heaps of scrap metal, small and big fires and soot everywhere. The visible impact of industry on the environment opposes the scene on the opposite bank. Across the water, the daily morning mist hovered and white cows grazed slowly and steadily as if stopped in another time. These pieces embody the opposing forces of nature and industry. The two are constantly fighting each other side by side everyday in a place that is loud, filthy and dangerousas well as serene & beautiful.

“Perch” is located in Larvik, Norway. A set of seven carved steps wind up a chunk of waste stone from the Stalaker quarry. The steps lead the viewer to a small platform on top of the stone. The viewer can see both the stunning panorama of the surrounding mountains and countryside as well as the deep chasm of the quarry that scars the earth permanently.

Socrates Sculpture Park
New York

“Lace” is the first piece of a series that marks the beginning of working both large scale and site specific. At Socrates Sculpture Park along the East River in Queens, the stunning views of the New York City skyline from Hallet’s Cove are impactful. The veil, constructed from steel washers, blurs a rectangular section of the view in watery patterns. This undulating screen brings the surrounding vista into sharp focus and the plain washers recall the industrial origins of the surrounding neighborhood. The layered history of Hallet’s Cove continuously evolves and moves forward as do the tumultuous tides of Hell’s gate to the North.
